....Tell me about Old Home Day....

Q: Will Old Home Day be on the 4th of July in 2006?

A: We've received a number of responses to our "survey" and the sentiment was clear that Old Home Day should be not be on the 4th but on the weekend before. So it will be.....on Saturday July 1st and the expanded Family Ice Cream Social and Music Cavalcade will be on Sunday July 2nd.

The Theme this year will be: MADE IN CARLISLE

Notes: The first time Old Home Day was ever held it was on July 31st, 1912. Then again on August 12th, 1913, then August 20th, in 1914 and 1915, and then on September 1st, 1919 and so on. From it's very beginning the purpose was fixed but not the date. Old Home Day has always been just that and it was never intended to be an "Old Independence Day" celebration.

By not being on the 4th there is no confusion between the original intent of this event and the celebration of a National Holiday. In 2005, OHD was held June 25 & 26. This gave folks a chance to attend that would otherwise have been on scheduled vacations over the 4th. Looks like this is the way to go!

Q: Will we have fireworks on Old Home day In 2006?

A: Not this year but look forward to 2008. If we can raise the money we hope to do it again then.

Q: How come there are no political candidates or political floats in Carlisle's Old Home Day?
A#1:
We work hard all year long to make sure Old Home Day is a harmonious event. This objective entails the elimination from the days’ activities, elements that divide our community, it's citizens and guests into separate camps. Sadly, politics does that. Well-meaning persons of each political party in strongly supporting their candidates, all too often alienate others who just as strongly support candidates of the other party. For us Old Home Day is at least one day of 365 that preserves and deserves non-contentious innocence. Old Home Day has always been an occasion which brings the community together in the true spirit of “common unity”. Divisive and bitter political campaigns such as we all too often must endure and all too often can’t seem to leave behind, are enough politics to last us through the time periods in between. We welcome each other and greet old friends who have made a special point of returning to Carlisle to enjoy the day and each other. It is the wrong time and the wrong place for anything political. Enjoy this day, vote on another.

A#2: And then there's this too..............as a non-profit organization we are governed by provisions included in Federal Regulations, Title 26 USC of the IRS under USC 501(c)(4) that expressly prohibit involvement of tax-exempt organizations in partisan political activities. Under these rules, no partisan political campaign activities, however minimal, are allowed.

Q: What time should I be at Spalding Field to buy a balloon ticket?
A:
Tickets will go on sale as soon as the balloon crew arrives. Right now that's set for 4-4:30 in the afternoon on Sunday July 2nd.

Q: What is Soapbox Derby racing?
A:
Official Soapbox Derby racing is much more involved and much more competitve than what we have planned. In real derby events the cars race against each other over a nearly 1,000 foot long track. We will only have one car race at a time over a distance of about 300 feet, starting from a height of about 10 or 12 feet. You can win prizes in four different categories and speed is only one of those. The fastest speed will be determined by Police Radar (gotcha!). For more information see the Soapbox Derby Details.

Q: Can I enter my utility vehicle in the Great parade with my goats?
A:
You need to speak to your goats about this. If it's OK with them it's OK with us (just clean up after 'em). Be sure to bring your floats/entries to the school plaza BEFORE 7am or between the hours of 9 and 10. School street is blocked to all vehicular traffic from 7 to 9. A one hour period for vehicular movement is provided between 9 and 10 and the street is closed again.

Q: Does a vehicle have to be registered to be driven in the Parade?
A:
If you have to drive it to the parade on the streets of Carlisle....yes, it must be registered.

Q: Hi: we are thinking of entering a float in the parade. How do we register?
A: By showing up on time at the school parking lot before 7 am or between the hours of 9 and 10. You'll be issued a number there and you're in. Parade moves out promptly (We wish!!) at 10 am.

Q: How do we go about registering for either the one or five mile road race? Is there a prize?
A:When the 2007 form is available we'll put in a link. After it is filled out, make sure it is mailed per the instructions. And yes there are handsome prizes and trophies!

Q: I need to reserve a booth for the Country Fair. Who should I speak to or what do I need to do?
A:
Please contact Bob and Nancy Orlando 978-369-1690 or The Country Fair. Be sure to bring your items for the Country Fair either before 7 or between the hours of 9 and 10. School street is blocked to all vehicular traffic beginning at 7 with only the one hour window available after that.

Q: Where are the rest of the questions?
A: We're asking everyone we know. But if you haven't found an answer to your question....e-mail us and we'll do our best to get you an answer ASAP.

Q: Are airplanes allowed in The Great Parade?
A:
Yes, but they must be flown slowly, and at low altitude so we can see 'em.

Q: Can I enter my pet snake in the OHD Parade?
A:. Yes, if it's non-poisonus and on a leash. Safety is our first concern.

Q: My grandmother is 97. Can she go on the hot air balloon ride?
A: Yes, but she will not be allowed to do any back seat driving. There is no back seat. If she is still interested in driving however, she may enter a soapbox derby car in the "unlimited" class.

Q: I'm building a racer for the Soapbox Derby. Am I allowed to use rocket propulsion for initial acceleration? Max burn time 5 seconds?
A: Because not all Carlisle residents have access to pyrotechnics (by the way..how is it you do?), the OHD committee feels that not only will this give you an unfair advantage, it will smoke up the place......a lot. Besides, with the short slope we picked, the entire ride probably won't last 5 seconds. So...no extra stuff like rockets 'cause Soapbox racers can only use gravity for propulsion. But there are real rules for the race and they must be adhered to.

Q: Last year, I got hit on the head during the egg toss but the egg didn't break. Am I going soft in the head or are you using hard boiled eggs?
A: It's not a matter of your physical shape or age. Everyone is welcome to the games. But the OHD Committee is considering issuing egg toss crash helmets......to the eggs.

Q: Is it true that judges of the cake contest get to eat the cakes? Can I be a Judge?
A: Vicious rumor! (How'd you find out?)

Q: Where are the rest of the questions?
