The event yielded five full tables (20 players) to play at the Sleeper Room at Carlisle Village Court. All winners received a gift certificate to play at the BridgeSpot club in Woburn. The local club loaned bidding boxes and materials to the Carlisle event at no charge. Player fees covered prizes and refreshments for the event. Old Home Day Children’s Pet Show, 2018
Despite it being a mostly overcast day, the Old Home Day Children’s Pet Show had many feathered and fluffy creatures register. As would make sense, most of the entries this year were dogs, but there were a few other species as well. For example, I met a short-haired guinea pig named Snicker, who was accompanied by Acadia, Maddie, and Cameron. Snicker recently celebrated her fifth birthday on June first (happy belated birthday Snicker!), travels and can go through an obstacle course that includes hoops and tunnels. One of the two sets of birds were three Embden goslings who hatched on the 20th and 22nd of this month! They were accompanied by Meg (6), Kai (3), and Yoshi (1).
Now for the best in show. Logan and Daisy, both Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, were well behaved and congenial. Their owner, Elise MacMarrow, gave us the scoop on how she cares for them and what they like to do. Apparently, these two like to wrestle and dig holes. Elise is an independent young lady, as she came over to the pet show herself, and does a fantastic job in caring for these two pups.
The other best in show dog was Suade, an Australian Shepard, who was immaculately groomed and well trained. Aside from looking the part, Suade keeps active by doing all sorts of tricks. Suade is an amiable dog who seemed to enjoy being at the show. I think we can all agree that owner, Isabella Keenf (14), should be quite proud of Suade.
Our final pair of best in show critters are Silkie chickens, Jellybean and Zelina. As a person who has never encountered a Silkie chicken before, I was very excited to meet these two and they were perfect representatives of their species. Jellybean and Zelina were even-tempered, calm, clean and show worthy. Their owner, Catherine Richardson (10), takes excellent care of these two!
Thank you all for making my first pet show as co-chair with Jan so much fun. We especially want to thank our four judges: Maggie Blake, Andy Blake, Emilio Hernández and Olivia Bewick, you all were fantastic and helpful. We look forward to seeing you all next Old Home Day.
